About this book
What if the rulers who shape the world do not understand the power they claim?
The Hypostasis of the Archons retells the early chapters of Genesis from a Gnostic point of view. According to the text, lesser powers called archons shape the material world under a proud, blind ruler named Samael. Their making of Adam and Eve opens a strange account of human life, ignorance, and spiritual knowledge.
The story moves through the garden, Eve and the serpent, and the family of Adam and Eve. Norea refuses to submit to the rulers and calls for protection. The angel Eleleth answers her call, opening a deeper question: where do these powers come from, and what limits their authority?

A Gnostic retelling found at Nag Hammadi
The Hypostasis of the Archons is the fourth text in Codex Two of the Nag Hammadi library. That codex also holds the Gospel of Thomas and several other works. The books were buried in a jar, probably in the fourth century, and came to light in 1945. All of them are in Coptic, the last stage of the Egyptian language, written mostly in Greek letters.
Scholars generally believe the work was first composed in Greek. They date it to the third century, though they cannot be exact. The author is unknown, but the text shows close knowledge of the Greek Bible and of Jewish ways of reading Genesis. It also borrows from Paul. Its opening lines refer to a passage in the Letter to the Ephesians about struggling against rulers and authorities, and the author reads those words as a clue to the whole story.

What is the Hypostasis of the Archons about?
It is a Gnostic retelling of Genesis in which a blind and arrogant ruler, Samael, and his fellow rulers make Adam and Eve. It follows Norea's resistance to them and ends with the angel Eleleth explaining where the rulers came from.
What does Hypostasis of the Archons mean?
Hypostasis is a Greek word for reality or underlying substance, and archons means rulers. The title is often given as The Reality of the Rulers, since the text describes the nature and origin of the powers that rule the world.
