About this book
What happens when bold, stubborn sisters must learn lessons they would rather leave behind in the woods?
In Girls of the Forest, L. T. Meade follows a group of sisters whose lives are bound to the woods and to one another. Quick and spirited, they do not always welcome instruction. Their forest setting helps shape the family, while the clash between wildness and lessons gives this story of growing up its lively energy.
At the heart of the novel is a question familiar to any family: how do people stay close when they disagree? The sisters have distinct natures, and learning does not come without resistance. Meade brings adventure, feeling and a clear sense of right and wrong to a domestic drama where family ties matter as much as individual spirit.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
Ten wild girls plot against an aunt
The story opens on a summer afternoon at The Dales, an old Elizabethan house gone shabby. Eight girls sit on the lawn and talk about Aunt Sophia, who is due tomorrow. The eldest, Verena, is gentle and fair. Her sisters call her Renny. Pauline, Briar and Patty are ready to show the visitor what they think of her interfering ways. The cause of it all is Miss Stapleton, the governess they nicknamed the Step, who wrote to the aunt before she left.
The girls drag their father, Mr. Dale, from his study. He is a stooped scholar with tortoiseshell spectacles who is busy with a line of Virgil. They call him Paddy or the Padre. When they ask him to describe Aunt Sophia, he can only say she was old, or perhaps neither old nor young, and unpleasant. He remembers nothing else.
