About this book
A sword can make a boy king. What keeps his kingdom from falling apart?
Arthur grows up hidden from the world, then draws the sword from the stone and becomes king of Britain. But a crown does not bring peace. Kings and barons rise against him, while Merlin guides him toward a kingdom built on justice. In James Knowles’s retelling of Thomas Malory’s legends, every victory brings fresh demands.
At Camelot, Guinevere and the Round Table gather a fellowship where no knight sits above another. Lancelot, Gawain and their companions ride into a world of giants, rival champions and enchantments. Yet courage with a sword is only part of their trial. Their promises to Arthur, to one another and to their own consciences pull them in different directions.

In short
A king keeps building a tower, and every night the walls fall down. A boy with no human father says two dragons sleep beneath the ground, and the boy is proved right.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
Merlin's dragons promise a king to come
The book begins before Arthur exists. King Vortigern tries to build a tower in the far west of Britain, but every night the walls fall down. His wizards say the stone will stand only if it is wet with the blood of a boy who has no mortal father. Messengers find such a child in a village street, and his name is Merlin.
Merlin will not be anyone's victim. He tells the king to dig, and far below lies a pool. When it is drained, two dragons lie asleep at the bottom, one white and one red. At night they wake and fight.
