Sobre este libro
On the Labrador coast, a small boat, moving ice and a sudden storm can turn daily work into a fight for survival.
In Labrador Days: Tales of the Sea Toilers, Wilfred Thomason Grenfell brings you close to fishermen, trappers and their families. These true-to-life sketches follow a year shaped by cod, seals and weather, from winter's closed sea to the short summer fishing season. Making a living means facing danger, hunger and hard choices.
Grenfell writes as an English doctor who cares for fishing communities along Labrador and northern Newfoundland. His sketches explore the hard coast, the risks of boats and ice, quiet heroism, and care for the sick. Fishermen venture out in small craft, women face life at home, and boys learn early to work.

A calm spring day ends in a squall
The book opens with a family errand. Late ice has kept John Mitchell's firewood on the shore, twenty miles up the bay. When the weather clears, he sets out in a trap boat with his sons Jim, Tom, Neddie and Willie. Their grandmother does not want the youngest two to go, but they beg until she gives in.
All day the sun is bright, the wind is light, and the boys boil the kettle and sing hymns. Then, around seven in the evening, John sees a faint cat's-paw of wind on the water. He remembers that the boat has no ballast and that her sheets are made fast. Before he can free them, the squall strikes like a hammer.

What is Labrador Days about?
It is a collection of eleven tales about the fishermen, trappers, traders and Inuit of the Labrador coast.
Who tells the stories in Labrador Days?
The author, a doctor on the coast, is often the narrator and sometimes a character. Other tales are told by local people such as Uncle Eph, Skipper Life Flynn and Ned Waring, in their own plain voices.
Is Labrador Days based on true events?
Grenfell wrote from his own years among the people of the coast, and the tales read as true-to-life accounts of events and characters he knew. Some details may be shaped for storytelling.
