Días en Labrador: relatos de los trabajadores del mar in short

Labrador Days gives you eleven small stories and one large picture of a coast. You meet fishermen, trappers, traders, Inuit hunters, a blind Frenchman and a one-legged rogue, and you see how each faces ice, hunger and storms. The same ideas come back: courage when no one is watching, kindness to the poor and the stranger, and the plain good humour of people who share what little they have.

What Días en Labrador: relatos de los trabajadores del mar is about

What would you do if a squall hit your boat with your sons aboard, miles from shore and unable to swim? Labrador Days is a set of eleven tales by Wilfred Grenfell, the doctor who served the coast's fishing families. He gives you shipwrecks, blizzards, courtships and quarrels, all told with warmth. The first tale begins on a calm spring day and aboard a boat bound for firewood.

Para quién es. You will love it if you enjoy true-to-life adventure, sea and snow, small harbours, sled dogs, and storytellers who tell you about people and their courage in plain, friendly words.

The story in 7 parts

A calm spring day ends in a squall

The book opens with a family errand. Late ice has kept John Mitchell's firewood on the shore, twenty miles up the bay. When the weather clears, he sets out in a trap boat with his sons Jim, Tom, Neddie and Willie. Their grandmother does not want the youngest two to go, but they beg until she gives in.

All day the sun is bright, the wind is light, and the boys boil the kettle and sing hymns. Then, around seven in the evening, John sees a faint cat's-paw of wind on the water. He remembers that the boat has no ballast and that her sheets are made fast. Before he can free them, the squall strikes like a hammer.

The doctor hears this story from John himself, and it sets the tone for the whole book. The sea gives little warning on this coast. The people who live beside it meet its dangers with prayer, quick thinking and plain endurance.

Joe and Nancy sail into trouble together

The second tale is about a young fisherman named Joe and his bride, Nancy.
