About this book

A spider, a hill, a wall: whole little worlds spring to life in a handful of rhyming lines.

The Real Mother Goose gathers English nursery rhymes from an anonymous folk tradition. Little Miss Muffet meets a frightening spider, Jack and Jill climb a hill, and Humpty Dumpty sits on a wall. Around them, animals, food, weather, and daily chores become the stuff of short songs and small stories.

These verses grow from song, play, street cries, and lullabies, changing as people pass them from voice to voice. Strong beats and repeated words invite you to chant, clap, or rock along. Blanche Fisher Wright’s bright, detailed illustrations place children, animals, and homely scenes beside the rhymes, giving your eye as much to explore as your ear.

A book of voices with no single author

The Real Mother Goose is a gathering of nursery rhymes, and nobody owns them. They grew out of English folk life over many generations. Nurses, farmers, street sellers and children sang them, changed a word here and there, and handed them on. The name Mother Goose is a friendly mask for all those voices.
