About this book
What if the life you are raised to want leaves no room for the person you hope to become?
In Henry Kitchell Webster’s The Real Adventure, a woman questions the future her upbringing prepares her to accept. Marriage and a respectable place in society are meant to give her life its shape. But she wants more than a role, and she begins to test the answers others offer.
Published in 1916, the novel explores women’s choices in marriage, work and public life. At its heart is a bond between people with different needs and different freedoms. As the heroine seeks a path of her own, money, reputation and loneliness give her questions a weight she cannot simply wish away.

A girl who writes down the joke
The story opens in a Chicago lecture hall in March. A professor is teaching the French Revolution, and he jokes that young girls should never marry a man with a passion for principles. Rose Stanton, who has not taken a single note all hour, writes the joke down with a perfectly serious face.
Rose is about twenty, with chestnut hair, a wide mouth, and a way of making everyone else in the room fade. Her mother, Naomi Rutledge Stanton, is a well-known writer and speaker for women's rights, and raised her children on Rousseau. After class, Rose is met by Harry, a gigantic football halfback who has followed her about for six months.
