About this book
A faint jolt breaks the comfort of a crossing. Before three hours pass, the Titanic is gone.
In The Truth About the Titanic, Archibald Gracie takes you aboard as a first-class passenger. There is good company at dinner and room to stroll on deck. Then the ship strikes an iceberg in the North Atlantic, and the familiar order of the voyage gives way to danger.
Gracie writes as both a survivor and an amateur historian. He describes what he sees and does, then gathers other survivors’ accounts to help set the facts in order. As passengers reach the lifeboats, there are not enough places for everyone. His purpose is a record fair to the living and the dead.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A survivor writes while memory is fresh
Archibald Gracie was a colonel who had written about the American Civil War. His earlier work on the Battle of Chickamauga showed his habit of gathering many witnesses and weighing what they said. He brought the same habit to the Titanic. He was not content to tell only his own story, because one person in one place sees only a small part of a disaster.
So he wrote to other survivors and collected their statements. He drew on the sworn testimony given to the United States Senate inquiry and the British inquiry. He set these against each other where they disagreed. The result is a book that reads in places like a memoir and in places like a report.
