About this book
What does freedom demand when other people claim the right to own your life?
In The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, Equiano recounts the African community he describes as his childhood home, then his kidnapping with his sister. The slave ship brings terror, sickness, and violence. Michael Henry Pascal, a British naval officer, purchases him, imposes the name Gustavus Vassa, and takes him into wartime service at sea.
Equiano learns English and learns to read and write, but his security remains beyond his control. Under the merchant Robert King, he works aboard ships and trades goods on his own account. Saving money offers a practical path toward freedom. His autobiography joins this struggle to religious searching and a direct challenge to those who profit from the slave trade.

In short

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A childhood in Essaka shapes his life
Equiano opens by describing the country he comes from. His father is an elder called an Embrenche, marked by a thick welt across the forehead. The elders settle disputes and punish crimes. He presents a plain, orderly society that he remembers clearly.
He describes feasts, dances, and music with obvious love. Because all take part in farming, he says, there are no beggars. War and slavery are part of that world too, but enslaved people among his own people work beside their masters and eat much the same food. He insists this is nothing like the plantation system he later meets.

What is The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano about?
It is Equiano's memoir of being kidnapped from West Africa as a child, enduring the slave ship and plantation life, earning his freedom, and travelling widely as a sailor and free man while speaking out against the slave trade.
Is the narrative a true story and when was it published?
It is presented as a true autobiography. Equiano published it in London in 1789, writing in his own voice about events from his childhood until the late 1780s, and he supports parts of it with letters and documents.
Why does Equiano have two names, Olaudah Equiano and Gustavus Vassa?
Olaudah is his African name, which he says means fortunate or favoured. Captain Pascal renamed him Gustavus Vassa on a ship to England. He refuses at first, then accepts it, and he uses both names.
