About this book
In wartime Stockholm, a quiet café table can be a meeting place for rival powers.
In The Copper House, Julius Regis takes you into a neutral capital where the war finds quieter ways to make itself felt. Agents watch one another across café tables and hotel lobbies. Open conflict gives way to whispers, hidden motives and the uneasy sense that nobody says quite what they mean.
Secrets drive this spy novel, while suspicion puts loyalty under pressure. What does a person owe to country, friends or conscience when those claims pull in different directions? First published in 1918, the book belongs to the early espionage thriller tradition, where hidden knowledge matters and quiet danger draws the reader onward.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A Baron Waits Outside Room 23
The book opens with a warning that nobody heeds. Early in 1917 a small weekly paper prints an open letter asking who the Man in the Whirlpool is. The writer argues that Stockholm, crowded with plotters and profiteers from every side, hides one strong mind that steers the forces of destruction. Readers laugh, and the paper soon falls silent.
The story proper begins on July 19, 1917, in a Stockholm hotel. Baron Frederick Fayerling, a solid man with cold blue eyes and a fashionable beard, snaps at his helpers as if cracking a whip. A spy known only as B.22 reports that a young fugitive named Bernard Jenin has just arrived from Russia. He is said to carry the most important paper in Europe, called the Tarraschin memorandum, and he has been put in room 23.
