About this book

What if the Bible is not one book, but a library of stories, laws, poems, and searching questions?

The King James Version of the Bible gathers law, history, poetry, prophecy, gospel, and letters. Genesis opens with an account of creation and a family. Exodus follows the descendants of Jacob into slavery in Egypt. From Moses to the history books, these writings explore how a people takes shape, lives under law, and faces a nation's rise and fall.

Job brings searching questions into poetry, while the prophets call for justice and promise hope. Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John tell the life of Jesus in four distinct accounts. Acts, the letters, and Revelation carry the collection onward. Read across these sections to explore writings rooted in ancient Israel and the early Christian church, and an English text that shapes the language.

What you’ll discover

  • A world and a family Explore how Genesis moves from its account of creation into the story of a family.
  • Slavery, law, and a people Follow Exodus into the questions of belonging and law that shape the collection.
  • Poetry with searching questions Turn to Job and the wisdom books for direct questions about ordinary life.
  • Justice alongside hope Meet prophets who claim to bring God's message to people and kings in crisis.
  • Four accounts of Jesus Discover how Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John each tell the story in their own way.

For readers drawn by faith, curiosity, or a love of English literature and history, who enjoy poetry, prophecy, stories of creation, and themes of covenant, justice and hope.

In short

What if one book held a whole library inside it? About forty-seven scholars built it on earlier English work, above all that of William Tyndale.

What is the King James Version of the Bible?

It is the English translation of the Bible published in 1611 under King James the First of England. It was made by a team of scholars from the Hebrew and Greek, and it became the standard English Bible for centuries.

Why was the King James Bible written?

King James agreed at the Hampton Court Conference in 1604 to commission a new version. The aim was a single English Bible for use in all churches, free of the partisan margin notes found in the Geneva Bible.

How many books are in the King James Bible?

The Protestant canon has sixty-six books, thirty-nine in the Old Testament and twenty-seven in the New. The 1611 printing also included the Apocrypha, a set of additional books, though most modern copies leave them out.
