About this book
Far from the playing field, can fair play still guide a young hero through treasure and danger?
In Frank Merriwell Down South, Burt L. Standish takes his young athlete and student beyond familiar campus ground. The trail leads through Mexico and the American South, with treasure, danger and daring driving the action. Frank brings strength, quick thinking and a cheerful spirit to an adventure where nerve and good sense count.
The story moves through short, fast chapters, keeping the focus on action rather than subtle character study. At its center is a hero who plays fair. Honesty, courage, loyalty to friends and self-control matter more than money, giving the hunt for treasure a clear moral center. The thrills also offer a glimpse into early American popular fiction.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A dying man describes a silver palace
The story opens in a wretched adobe hut near Mendoza, Mexico. A sick American named Jack Burk tells Frank Merriwell about a palace of gold and silver in the Sierra Madre, built in the days of Cortez and guarded by fearful natives.
Professor Scotch, Frank's fussy guardian, insists the man is delirious. But Burk presses a crumpled map into Frank's hand and shows a small golden Aztec figure, and the professor admits the gold is real. Burk explains that he and his partner, Alwin Bushnell, crossed a misty chasm by balloon, and he names Frank his heir before witnesses. Hans Dunnerwust, Frank's Dutch chum, can only mutter Chimminy Gristmas.
