About this book

Can science help rebuild a society torn between old authority and new disorder?

In A General View of Positivism, Auguste Comte brings his philosophy into a short account for ordinary readers. Writing in France amid the upheaval of 1848, he asks how people can build a stable society without giving up progress. His answer begins with a bold claim: science can study society itself.

Comte connects the growth of human thought with a ladder of sciences that leads to sociology. He gives workers, women and thinkers roles in his vision of renewal. Yet knowledge alone is not enough for him. His plan also turns toward love of Humanity, proposing a religion meant to hold society together.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1 of 6

Human thought grows through three stages

Comte begins with what he sees as the basic law of the mind. Every branch of knowledge, he argues, passes through three states. In the first, the theological state, people explain events by the will of gods or spirits. In the second, the metaphysical state, they explain them by abstract forces and hidden essences. In the third, the positive state, they give up asking about ultimate causes and look instead for the laws that link observed facts.

What is A General View of Positivism about?

It is Comte's short statement of positivism. He argues that knowledge should rest on observed facts and laws, that sociology can study society scientifically, and that a new moral order based on love of Humanity can unite order and progress.

What are the three stages in Comte's law?

Comte says each science passes through a theological stage, where gods explain events, a metaphysical stage, where abstract forces explain them, and a positive stage, where we seek laws linking observed facts.

What does positivism mean in this book?

For Comte, positive means real, useful, certain and constructive. Positivism is the view that reliable knowledge comes from observation and reasoning about facts, and that this method should guide society as well as nature.
