About this book
When a faith changes over centuries, how can anyone tell growth from corruption?
In An Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine, John Henry Newman asks whether early Christianity and Roman Catholic teaching express the same faith. Many English Protestants of his day see later doctrines as errors added to a purer beginning. His study of the Church Fathers leads him to question that view.
Newman begins with a wider question: how do great ideas unfold as people live by them? He argues that Christian doctrine develops through debate and new questions, rather than appearing fully stated at once. His seven tests offer a way to distinguish faithful growth from change that breaks with the past.

In short
How can a religion change over 1800 years and still be the same religion? Picture a visitor comparing the Church of the Apostles with the Church of the fourth century, then with the Church of Trent.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
History cannot simply be set aside
Newman begins with method. Christianity has lasted so long that it is a fact of world history, like the laws of Sparta or the religion of Muhammad. You cannot settle what it is by private opinion. You must look at what it has actually been.
Some say the original faith vanished early, or was a mixture of borrowed ideas. Newman answers that these views need proof. The natural assumption is that the community the Apostles left behind held the religion they taught.

What is An Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine about?
It asks how Christian teaching can change over 1800 years and still be the same faith. Newman argues that great ideas grow, and he offers seven tests to tell faithful growth from corruption.
What are Newman's seven notes of a true development?
They are preservation of type, continuity of principles, power of assimilation, logical sequence, anticipation of its future, conservative action on its past, and chronic vigor. Each is a sign that a change grows from its source.
When was the Essay written and why?
Newman finished it in 1845, as he was leaving the Church of England, and revised it in 1878. He wrote it to answer the objection that Christian history is full of contradictions.
