About this book
What if the furnace cannot prove what the world is made of?
In The Sceptical Chymist, Robert Boyle turns a dispute about matter into a conversation among friends in a garden. Themistius defends Aristotle’s earth, air, fire and water. Carneades, who represents Boyle’s views, asks whether the evidence supports those familiar claims. What seems settled becomes a question worth opening again.
The chymists offer another answer: salt, sulphur and mercury. But Carneades challenges their certainty too. Both schools claim that fire separates bodies into their true parts. Boyle tests that claim against the furnace and the flask, exploring what experiments can show—and what people are too ready to conclude.

The Sceptical Chymist is an argument dressed up as a conversation. Robert Boyle, an Anglo-Irish natural philosopher who lived and worked in England, published it in London in 1661, at first without his name.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
Four friends argue in a garden
Boyle does not lecture. He gives the book to a small group of speakers, and he sits behind the one called Carneades, who stands for his own views. Carneades is a sceptic in the old sense. He does not say that nothing can be known. He says that claims must be weighed before they are believed.
He is opposed by two speakers who each defend a school. Themistius speaks for Aristotle and the four elements. Philoponus speaks for the chymists, the experienced furnace workers who hold that bodies are made of a few chemical principles. A fourth friend, Eleutherius, listens, asks questions and acts as a fair judge.

What is The Sceptical Chymist about?
It is a dialogue in which Robert Boyle questions the two leading theories of matter of his day, Aristotle's four elements and the chymists' salt, sulphur and mercury, and argues that neither has been proved by experiment.
Who are Carneades, Themistius and Philoponus?
They are speakers in the dialogue. Carneades voices Boyle's sceptical view, Themistius defends Aristotle's elements, and Philoponus defends the chymists. A fourth friend, Eleutherius, listens and acts as judge.
What does chymist mean in the title?
Chymist is the old spelling of chemist. In Boyle's time it covered alchemists and furnace workers who studied the makeup of substances. A sceptical chymist is one who doubts accepted claims about them.
