About this book

A family crosses the sea, and generations wrestle with faith, power, and promises they struggle to keep.

The Book of Mormon is a foundational scripture of the Latter-day Saints faith, first published in 1830. According to the text, prophets in the Americas preserve a record of their people across generations. First Nephi begins with Lehi warning Jerusalem and a family leaving for a new land, where their descendants build cities, make covenants, and face conflict.

The books include First and Second Nephi, Mosiah, Alma, Helaman, Ether, and Moroni. Their stories follow rulers, prophets, missionaries, and record keepers through warnings, quarrels, and war. Joseph Smith Jr. said the work came from an ancient record on metal plates. Latter-day Saints read it alongside the Bible as a second witness for Jesus Christ.

A book that arrives with a story

The Book of Mormon comes with an origin story that is part of the book's identity. Joseph Smith said that as a teenager in western New York he was visited by an angel named Moroni. The angel told him of a record engraved on plates of gold, buried in a hill near his home. Smith said he was allowed to take the plates in 1827 and to translate them.
