About this book

A mountain of diamond, a life lived backward, and a dance a penniless young man wants: welcome to Fitzgerald’s restless world.

In Tales of the Jazz Age, F. Scott Fitzgerald gathers eleven short stories where glamour meets unease. The Jelly-Bean follows Jim Powell, a young man in Georgia with no money and no plans, toward a rich girl and the hope of a dance. May Day moves to New York, where a spring day and night reveal a city losing its balance.

The collection moves from parties and flirtations into strange possibilities. The Diamond as Big as the Ritz imagines wealth on a fantastic scale. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button follows a man born old who grows young. In The Camel’s Back, a costume party becomes a comedy of mistaken identity. Together, these tales explore an age that spends freely yet feels restless.

A poor boy meets a rich girl in The Jelly-Bean

The collection opens with The Jelly-Bean, set in a small town in Georgia. Its hero is Jim Powell, a young man who drifts through the days with no money and no plans. People in town use the word jelly-bean for a loafer like him, a man who hangs about pool halls and lives on little. He is not unkind and he is not stupid, but he has settled for very little.

What is Tales of the Jazz Age about?

It is a collection of eleven stories by F. Scott Fitzgerald, published in 1922. They deal with money, youth, love and class in the years after the First World War, mixing realism, fantasy and comedy.

Which stories are in Tales of the Jazz Age?

The book holds The Jelly-Bean, The Camel's Back, May Day, Porcelain and Pink, The Diamond as Big as the Ritz, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Tarquin of Cheapside, O Russet Witch!, The Lees of Happiness, Mr. Icky and Jemina the Mountain Girl.

Is the Benjamin Button story the same as the movie?

No. Fitzgerald's story is much shorter and drier, set in Baltimore from 1860. Benjamin is born looking old and grows younger. The film changed many details and characters, so the two differ greatly.
