About this book
A few words can lose the room—or bring everyone together in a laugh.
Jokes For All Occasions gathers short humorous pieces for dinners, parties, meetings and family gatherings. This anonymous collection offers setups, punchlines, puns and small comic scenes, each short enough to remember. Rather than following one story, you dip into pieces meant to be told aloud and shared with the people around you.
The collection explores humour through the listener, timing and brevity, the mood of different occasions, and the reasons old jokes endure. Vanity, hunger, haggling, misunderstandings and small mistakes supply familiar comic ground. Behind the punchlines sits a simple idea: a joke starts with the person who hears it, not just the person who tells it.

In short
An absentminded inventor leaps from a balloon wearing his new parachute, then regrets that he has forgotten his umbrella. That is one of hundreds of quick tales in Jokes For All Occasions, an anonymous collection from the years of Prohibition.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
Build every joke around its punch line
The preface says there are two ways to tell a story. One is very brief and leans on the punch line. The other builds up the tale first, so that the ending crowns it. A beginner, the author advises, should choose the brief way and say only what the listener needs.
The preface also offers an old Chinese tale about how humor crosses borders. A man wearing a thief's collar explains that he only picked up a scrap of rope beside a canal. He cannot see why the punishment is so harsh, unless perhaps an ox was tied to the other end. Everything before that last detail exists to make it land.
