About this book
What happens when love shares a home with big dreams—and someone has to manage the everyday life?
In Marjorie Benton Cooke’s Bambi, a bright, practical heroine meets love, money and work with quick wit and heart. This warm romantic comedy follows two people learning to live together. Marriage is not simply a prize to win: it takes patience, argument and effort, especially when ambition makes its demands.
Bambi sees the world with a cheerful eye, but living beside a gifted dreamer brings real questions. Dreams need time and money, and someone must help carry their cost. Cooke explores the work behind romance through a heroine whose practical outlook gives the story its humour and its warmth.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A bride picks a husband at breakfast
The novel opens with Bambi telling her father, Professor James Parkhurst, that he has failed as an educator. He taught her to be happy, but happiness pays badly, and she wants a profession. The Professor is a mathematician so absent-minded that he once set off for class in his pajamas. Bambi has run his life since she was five.
She has also chosen a husband. His name is Jarvis Jocelyn, a handsome, poetic young man with no money and no interest in earning any. Her reasoning is wonderfully practical. He will starve unless someone takes him in, and she is used to looking after helpless men. Her father objects, but nobody has ever won an argument with her.
