Who Robert Acton is
Robert Acton lives near the Wentworths in New England, with his mother and his sister Lizzie. He is wealthy, thoughtful, and kind, with experience of places beyond the family's quiet surroundings. His travels give him a broader outlook, but he is not easily fooled by polished manners.
Robert Acton and the others in the story
Eugenia sees Robert Acton as both a promising wealthy husband and someone who might understand her. She talks to him about Europe, music, and pleasures that Boston does not offer. He enjoys her company, yet her elegant conversation leaves him uncertain about how much to trust her.
Their connection brings the novel's concern with charm and honesty into a personal relationship. Eugenia hopes to secure her future, while Acton's interest is accompanied by persistent questions about her.
