Resumen de Los europeos
Para quién es
For readers who love witty social comedy, short novels, and quiet human drama, with charm, romance, and contrasting ways of life. It is a good first Henry James.
De qué trata este libro
The Europeans is a short comic novel by Henry James, published in 1878. James was an American who spent most of his life in Europe, and here he turns the usual story around. Two worldly Europeans cross the Atlantic and land among a serious, upright family in New England. The Americans are the ones who seem odd, and the visitors are the ones who seem free.
The book is light in tone but sharp in its eye. It gives you a household of earnest cousins, a charming brother and sister with doubtful money and bright manners, and a neighbor who watches them all with interest. Over a few weeks, hearts shift and old habits are tested. You get a clear picture of two ways of living, and the pleasure of seeing how little a plain word can hide. Let us begin with the arrival of the two travelers, and with what they hope to find.

Two travelers arrive with a plan
The story opens in Boston, where a brother and sister have come from Europe. She is Eugenia, Baroness Münster, a woman of elegance who has lived at courts and in drawing rooms. Her brother is Felix Young, a cheerful painter and sometime performer who has knocked about the Continent with little money and a great deal of good humor.
Eugenia has a problem. She is married to a German prince, Adolf of Silberstadt-Schreckenstein, but the marriage is of the kind called morganatic. That means she does not share his rank, and his family wants it ended. She has come to America to look for relatives and, if she can, for a fortune. A rich husband of her own choosing would suit her very well.
Felix has simpler hopes. He wants to be happy, and he has the gift of being happy almost anywhere. He studies his sister's worries with affection and a little amusement. The two of them make an odd, bright pair against the gray Boston streets.
Their plan is to visit cousins who live out in the country, the Wentworths. These relatives have never met them. The cousins have heard only that the Europeans are a bit strange, and a bit unsettling. The visitors set out with curiosity, and also with a sharp sense of what they might gain.
