A fashionable bride meets a hard truth
The story opens in January 1914, when Franky, Viscount Norwater, a young Guardsman, marries Margot Mountjohn, whom he calls Kittums. She is rich, twenty years old and ruled by her ladies' club. In June, at the Paris Grand Prix week, she learns she is to have a child.
Margot weeps and rages. Her friends had given her good luck charms to keep this very thing away, and she believed in them. At lunch under the roses at Nadier's restaurant, Franky asks her why she fears it. She answers that her mother died at her birth, and that she married knowing nothing.
Franky wants a son, because his scoundrel uncle would otherwise inherit the title. His love turns him gentle, and the book sets this private fear beside the public storm that is coming.
