Über dieses Buch
What if a devil comes to London to cause trouble—and finds people already know every trick?
In Ben Jonson’s stage comedy The Devil is an Ass, young Pug begs Satan for one day on earth to prove himself. London offers plenty of opportunity: swindlers, jealous husbands and fools hungry for money. But this eager devil enters a city where human greed needs little help.
Fitzdottrel dreams of wealth and rank while guarding his wife, Frances, as though she belongs to him. Meercraft offers wild business schemes, and Wittipol uses bargains and disguise to get close to Frances. Around them, fashionable gossips keep talk alive. Money, marriage and vanity feed a crowded plot in which everyone seems to want something.

Kurz gesagt
What happens when a junior devil is sent to London to corrupt people and finds they are already far ahead of hell? That is the question behind The Devil Is an Ass, a comedy by Ben Jonson, first performed in 1616 by the King's Men at the Blackfriars playhouse.
Aus der 15-Minuten-Zusammenfassung · Kerngedanke 1
Hell sends a foolish devil to London
The play begins with Pug, a junior devil, asking Satan for a month on earth. Satan laughs at him. He lists Pug's usual feats, which are crippling a cow, souring butter, or getting some old woman hanged as a witch.
Pug asks for a Vice to help him, and Iniquity, the old comic tempter, skips in with rhyming couplets. Satan has no patience. Such a Vice belongs to a time fifty years gone, he says. Now real sin has moved on and wears fine clothes.
