What if the empty space around you is full of something that has weight, pushes, and lifts?
In Rollo's Philosophy: Air, Jacob Abbott turns an unseen part of everyday life into something worth exploring. Rollo's subject is air: what it is, how it behaves, and why it matters. Simple trials and common objects make the questions approachable, without difficult formulas.
The exploration moves from air as a real substance to its weight, pressure, and motion. Wind gives sailing boats and windmills their power; birds, kites, and balloons invite questions about lift. Along the way, Abbott's clear, kindly teaching offers a glimpse of how children learn science in his nineteenth-century books.

Kurz gesagt
Rollo is lost in a snowstorm. He spots a sled track and follows it with hope, sure it will lead him home.
Aus der 15-Minuten-Zusammenfassung · Kerngedanke 1
Look carefully before you trust a hopeful guess
The book opens on a late March morning. Rollo, his cousin Lucy, and little Nathan walk across hard snow with a picnic basket and a sled. Their father has warned them to stay near the sled road that Jonas made. At the edge of a wood Rollo builds a camp and a fire. After lunch large flakes begin to fall.
On the way home Rollo loses his bearings. The air is thick with snowflakes, and the snow hides tracks and changes the look of the fields. He says nothing and walks on. Soon he finds a sled track and follows it, even though Lucy points out that it runs the other way.

What is Rollo's Philosophy: Air about?
It follows a boy named Rollo, his brother Nathan, and their cousins as they learn about air through experiments. Topics include flight, balloons, bellows, pressure, fire, gravitation, wind, and sound, explained through family conversations.
Who is Jonas in the Rollo books?
He is practical and good-humored, repairs bellows, burns brush heaps, and takes Rollo on the boat trip. He often teaches Rollo by showing him what to do.
What does the author want children to learn?
The preface says the main goal is to shape habits of thinking, reasoning, and observing, more than to add knowledge. The characters learn to test ideas, admit mistakes, and stay cheerful when an experiment fails.
