About this book

What happens when a quiet marriage meets a longing that comfort cannot satisfy?

Luísa has a loving husband, a comfortable Lisbon home, and days that feel painfully dull. When Jorge leaves on business, her wealthy cousin and former suitor Basílio returns from Paris. His charm promises the adventure she knows from romantic novels, but his desire carries little concern for its cost.

In Cousin Bazilio, Eça de Queirós turns a private affair into a sharp portrait of marriage and class. Rooms, letters, and gossip carry danger. Juliana, the household maid, sees what others overlook, while respectable friends hide behind grand sayings and small lies. Beneath the orderly home, desire and resentment begin to shift the balance of power.

What you’ll discover

  • Comfort that becomes confinement Follow Luísa’s hunger for adventure as her secure daily life begins to feel like a cage.
  • Romance meets shabby rooms Enter the lovers’ secret Paradise, where a grand name meets the reality of a shabby lodging.
  • A servant with secrets Meet Juliana, whose years of work and poverty sharpen her attention to the household’s hidden life.
  • Respectability under a sharp eye Watch Conselheiro Acácio turn obvious facts into solemn wisdom in a circle eager to respect him.
  • Letters with a hidden cost Feel the threat in private words as romantic keepsakes become something far harder to control.

Is it for you?

This book suits readers who like psychological novels, social satire and stories about marriage and class, or who enjoy Flaubert and Zola. It may feel slow to anyone who wants constant action, since the first half moves through rooms, letters and gossip.
