About this book
On a dying Mars, a young prince pursues a woman he loves but has no right to claim.
Carthoris of Helium, son of John Carter and Dejah Thoris, loves Thuvia, princess of Ptarth. She loves him too, but she is promised to Kulan Tith, ruler of Kaol. When the jealous prince Astok schemes to take her, love becomes a test of honor, and Carthoris takes to the skies alone.
Edgar Rice Burroughs carries the chase across Barsoom, a desert world of flying ships, green warriors, and swords. Thuvia brings courage and a rare power to calm wild beasts with her mind. Beyond the pursuit lies Lothar, a lost city whose people practice a strange mental art, where the dead seem to fight.

In short
Thuvia, Maid of Mars is the fourth of Edgar Rice Burroughs's tales of Barsoom, his name for a dying, desert Mars of red men, green warriors, flying ships and swords. It was written during the years of the First World War, for readers of pulp magazines who wanted to be carried far from home.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A prince of Helium loves a promised princess
The story begins with Carthoris, the son of John Carter and Dejah Thoris, the Princess of Helium. He has his father's strength and his mother's pride, and he has grown up among the great fleets and towers of his home city. He is also restless, because a young man of Barsoom is expected to prove himself in the air and on the battlefield.
His trouble is of the heart. He loves Thuvia, a princess of the realm of Ptarth, and she loves him in return. But Thuvia has been promised to Kulan Tith, the ruler of Kaol, in a match meant to keep peace between powerful cities. On Barsoom, such promises are matters of state, and breaking one can start a war.
