About this book
What does dignity look like when poverty, guilt, and power press against an ordinary life?
In Best Russian Short Stories, editor Thomas Seltzer brings together tales by Leo Tolstoy, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Anton Chekhov, Nikolai Gogol, and Maxim Gorky. Peasants, officers, servants, and dreamers face questions of conscience. Love, loss, and the struggle for meaning give their choices a weight that reaches beyond the brief span of each story.
Tolstoy explores pride and guilt; Dostoevsky enters psychological torment and the search for redemption. Chekhov reveals the quiet tragedies of ordinary life, while Gogol blends satire, horror, and the surreal. Gorky brings the grit and resilience of the poor. Together, these writers offer different ways of asking how a person ought to live.

A card party plants a dangerous obsession
The collection opens with Pushkin's The Queen of Spades. At a late card party in St. Petersburg, Tomsky tells of his grandmother, an old Countess who once learned three winning cards in Paris. Hermann, a young engineer who never gambles, listens closely.
Hermann is frugal and ambitious, and he puts his trust in saving, moderation and steady work. Yet the story of the three cards fills his dreams with green tables and heaps of gold. He begins to walk past the Countess's house and notices her young ward, Lizaveta, at a window.
