About this book
What do you owe to a cause when love asks for something else?
In Sarita, the Carlist, Arthur W. Marchmont brings adventure and romance into the troubled world of nineteenth-century Spain. The Carlist cause backs a rival claim to the throne. Against this divided background, Sarita stands at the center of a tale where private feeling meets public conflict.
Love, duty and political loyalty pull this historical romance in different directions. Beneath its movement and danger lies a question: what do we owe to a cause, a family or someone we love? In short
Sarita, the Carlist is an adventure romance by Arthur W. Marchmont, a British novelist who wrote many popular tales of intrigue.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A younger son is sent abroad
The book opens with a joke that is also a plan. Ferdinand Carbonnell, younger son of Lord Glisfoyle, explains that his elder brother Lascelles wants to marry a rich widow, Mrs. Curwen. She likes the family but finds Lascelles too stiff and solemn. She has also said, with a laugh, that Ferdinand is a scapegrace, and the family decides he had better not be around.
Their answer is a post as probationary attaché at the British Embassy in Madrid. Ferdinand speaks perfect Spanish, because he spent his boyhood in Spain. His father is delighted and talks about ladders, which is his favorite picture of a career. Ferdinand is not pleased to be sent away for his brother's sake, but he takes it with good humor. His sister Mercy, his closest friend, resents the exile far more than he does.
