About this book

What if a ruined abbey, a mountain spring, or a moonlit path holds something the living cannot explain?

In Romantic Legends of Spain, Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer turns old rumours and local traditions into tales of longing and fear. The Mountain of the Spirits takes you to Soria on All Souls Night, where Beatriz's wish sends her cousin Alonso toward a haunted mountain. Love draws him toward what others dread.

The Green Eyes follows Fernando de Argensola, a hunter obsessed with eyes glimpsed in a spring. Master Pérez the Organist brings you to Seville and its beloved blind musician. In The Moonbeam, the dreamy poet Manrique wanders ruins at night. Across these stories, strange music and elusive visions bring the supernatural close.

A night of the dead on the mountain

The tale called The Mountain of the Spirits is set in Soria on All Souls Night, the night when Spain remembers its dead. The Templars and their Castilian enemies fought there, and the tale says the dead still stir on that one night of the year.
