Über dieses Buch
Why do Shakespeare’s plays still hold an audience—and can we admire their power without overlooking their faults?
In Preface to Shakespeare, Samuel Johnson asks what makes a writer worth reading long after the fashions of his time fade. His answer begins with human nature. Shakespeare’s people feel true to life, Johnson argues, and his plays bring comedy and tragedy together rather than keeping them in separate worlds.
But Johnson does not ask you to admire blindly. He names Shakespeare’s faults, challenges critics who demand unity of time and place, and considers what an editor owes a damaged text. This is an argument about literary judgement, not a guide to plots: praise must have reasons, and even a great writer deserves close scrutiny.

Kurz gesagt
Why do people still crowd theaters to see plays written by a man who died long ago? Samuel Johnson opens his Preface to Shakespeare by questioning the praise lavished on the dead.
Aus der 15-Minuten-Zusammenfassung · Kerngedanke 1
Only time can fairly test a poet
Johnson opens with a worry. People complain that the dead get praise they have not earned, and that old books win honors simply because they are old. He admits that some readers revere anything that has survived, without asking whether chance played a part.
But he draws a line. A proof in geometry shows its force at once, and a hundred years add nothing to it. A poem rests on observation and experience, so its worth is a matter of comparison. No one calls a river deep without having seen many rivers. In the same way, no poem is called excellent until it has stood beside many others.

What is Johnson's Preface to Shakespeare about?
It is Samuel Johnson's introduction to his edition of the plays. He praises Shakespeare as a faithful mirror of human nature, lists his faults, defends him against the rules of time and place, and explains how he handled the text.
What does Johnson mean by saying Shakespeare is the poet of nature?
He means Shakespeare's characters are shaped by general passions common to everyone, not by local customs or fashions. Because they show universal human behavior, readers in every age recognize them as true to life.
What does Johnson say about the unities of time and place?
He argues they rest on a false idea that audiences mistake the stage for reality. Spectators know they are in a theater, so a play may move between places and spans of time without losing its force.
