A bright American girl charms London
The book opens in April at the Savoy Hotel in London. Patty Fairfield lives there with her father and her young stepmother Nan, who is more like an older sister than a parent. Mr. Fairfield chose a hotel over a rented house so that Nan would not have to keep house on her holiday. Patty is so full of enthusiasm that she wishes she were twins, so she could attend two afternoon invitations at once. She settles on a musicale at Mrs. Hastings's home.
Patty finds English habits funny and says so cheerfully. She laughs that Londoners believe American ladies go to market wearing diamonds. She is just as amused that London ladies shop on Bond Street in trailing pink chiffon. Yet she loves the city and its kind hostesses. English girls of her age are kept more secluded, so she feels set back two or three years, but she shrugs it off. Her taste in clothes is so sure that Nan now asks her advice about fabrics.
