From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A quarrel in the woods makes an outlaw
Robin Hood is eighteen, a yeoman of Locksley Town, when the Sheriff of Nottingham proclaims a shooting match with a butt of ale as the prize. He sets off through Sherwood Forest at dawn in the Maytime, whistling and thinking of his sweetheart Maid Marian. Under a great oak he comes upon fifteen of the King's foresters feasting on a huge pasty. They laugh at his bow and call it a one-penny toy, and they say his mother's milk is hardly dry on his lips.
Stung by the mockery, Robin wagers twenty marks that he can bring down the best hart in a herd far away at the end of the glade. He strings his bow with his foot, nocks a clothyard arrow, and the noblest stag of all falls dead. The foresters are furious, because the deer belong to the King and killing one can cost a man his ears. Robin simply walks away with a grim face.
