About this book
What does it cost to make a hard land prosper—and who gets to share in the harvest?
On Nebraska’s bare high plains, Alexandra Bergson sees a future her family can barely imagine. After her father’s death, the young Swedish immigrant takes charge of their struggling farm. Crops fail, cattle die, and neighbors leave. In Willa Cather’s O Pioneers!, Alexandra’s calm resolve meets both the prairie’s hardships and her brothers’ doubts.
Across the years, the farm’s fortunes change, but prosperity brings no simple peace. Alexandra hopes to give her youngest brother, Emil, a wider life through education. Her neighbor Marie Shabata brings warmth to an unhappy marriage. Around them, loyalty, longing, and arguments over family property test what hard work can secure—and what it cannot.

A struggling family on a hard land
The story opens in Hanover, a small and ragged town on the Nebraska Divide. A child stands in the wind and the cold, a kitten is stranded on a telegraph pole, and the town seems barely attached to the earth. The Bergsons are a Swedish family who have taken up land here, and the land has not been kind to them. The winters are fierce and the soil seems stubborn, and many of their neighbors are already thinking of leaving.
John Bergson, the father, is a worn and sickly man. He has worked hard and borrowed money, and he knows he is dying. He has four children. Alexandra is the eldest and the steadiest. Lou and Oscar are the middle sons, and little Emil is the baby, whom Alexandra loves with something close to a mother's love.
