About this book
What if caring for hounds and tracking a hart could teach a nobleman how to live?
In The Master of Game, Edward of Norwich opens the world of hunting at an English king’s court. As Master of Game, he is responsible for the king’s hunting and hounds. His treatise brings you close to the animals, practical skills and duties that shape this part of noble life.
Accounts of hares, harts and boars sit alongside the customs of English and French hunting. Beneath these practical details lies a moral argument: hunting keeps a man from idleness and vice. The care of dogs and the knowledge of quarry become part of a larger claim about virtue.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A nobleman's manual passed to a prince
The book has two authors and two eras behind it. Gaston Phoebus ruled Foix and Béarn in the south of France, and he wrote the Book of the Hunt in the late fourteenth century. He was a famous hunter and a proud lord, and he wrote from long practice. Copies of his work were made with painted pictures, and they spread through the courts of Europe.
Edward of Norwich took that French book and made it English. He did not simply copy it. He chose what to keep, he put the sentences into his own language, and he said openly that he was working from Gaston's text. His own additions are the part of the book that deals with England.
