About this book
On a mountain, anxious apostles ask why the world is flawed—and, according to this text, a voice answers from light.
The Letter of Peter to Philip begins with Peter calling Philip to join his fellow apostles. It then becomes a revelation dialogue: the followers gather on the Mount of Olives, pray, and encounter a great light. In the text, the risen Jesus answers their questions about the world's flaws and the powers that rule it.
This short, anonymous early Christian work explores Gnostic ideas through urgent questions about creation, spiritual freedom, and suffering. Its dialogue describes the deficiency of the aeons, the rise of an arrogant ruler, and humanity's struggle against cosmic powers. The apostles seek understanding, but they also face a harder question: what must they endure as they teach?

A buried Coptic letter from Gnostic Christians
The Letter of Peter to Philip survives in Coptic, the last stage of the ancient Egyptian language. It was found near Nag Hammadi and sits in Codex VIII. Its author is unknown. Most scholars think it was first written in Greek, so a reader today meets a translation.
Many link it to the Sethian family of Gnostic Christianity, named for Seth, the third son of Adam. Sethian writings speak of a highest God beyond every name. They also speak of a lower ruler who helped make the world and wrongly believes himself supreme. The letter assumes this background without stopping to explain it.

What is the Letter of Peter to Philip about?
It tells how Peter calls Philip to rejoin the apostles, how they pray on the Mount of Olives, and how the risen Christ answers their questions about the world's flawed origin, the powers that oppose them, and the meaning of suffering.
Where was the Letter of Peter to Philip found and when was it written?
It was found in 1945 near Nag Hammadi in Upper Egypt, in Codex VIII. Scholars date its composition to the second or third century, probably in Greek, and the surviving copy is in Sahidic Coptic.
What does the deficiency of the aeons mean?
In this text the deficiency is a lack in the divine world. It begins when the Mother acts without the Father's commandment and a part of her is seized by the Arrogant One, after which the world of powers and bodies arises.
