About this book
What if the soul’s path leads through hidden levels of reality, beyond even the reach of thought?
In Marsanes, a visionary teacher describes an ascent through thirteen seals, or levels of cosmic reality. This ancient Sethian Gnostic text explores the soul’s climb toward its source. Its teachings place an unknowable God, called the Silent One, beyond thought and naming, and ask how learning and vision can guide the soul.
The surviving work comes from a badly damaged Coptic book found near Nag Hammadi in Egypt. Its gaps leave broken but striking teachings rather than a clear story or complete argument. Alongside its map of being, Marsanes explores the shape of the soul, the meaning of stars, and Greek letters as signs of divine order.

A damaged book from the Egyptian desert
Marsanes was found among the Nag Hammadi books, a group of thirteen leather-bound codices buried in a jar in Egypt. These books hold Coptic versions of many texts that Christian groups of the early centuries read, including several Gnostic writings. Codex X is in the worst state of them all. Its pages have lost large pieces along the edges and in places whole lines are gone.
Because of this, scholars work with a text full of gaps. Translators mark the missing parts, and sometimes the sense of a whole page has to be guessed from a few surviving words. Even so, the shape of the work can be seen. It is a first-person revelation, in which a teacher speaks of what he has seen and what he has been taught.

What is the Marsanes text about?
Marsanes is a Gnostic revelation about the levels of being, from an unknowable God down to the sense world. It also teaches how the soul can ascend, and links letters of the alphabet to the divine order and the heavens.
Where was Marsanes found?
It was found in 1945 among the Nag Hammadi codices in Upper Egypt. It occupies Codex X, which is in very poor condition, so large parts of the text are missing or hard to read.
When was Marsanes written?
The Coptic copy is from the fourth century or so, but scholars think the Greek original is older, most often placed in the third century. The exact date is debated, and the author is unknown.
