About this book

What if Peter sees a living, laughing Savior above the suffering figure on the cross?

The Apocalypse of Peter is a short Christian revelation written under the apostle Peter’s name by an unknown author. In a private conversation, the Savior prepares Peter to see what others cannot. Warnings about false leaders give way to visions that unsettle what Peter thinks he sees.

According to the text, the suffering body on the cross is distinct from the living, spiritual Savior above it. This Gnostic account explores flesh and spirit, blindness and understanding. Found among the Nag Hammadi writings, it offers a view of Jesus and the cross outside the New Testament.

In short

What would you see if you pressed your hands over your eyes, and the Savior told you to describe it? In the Apocalypse of Peter, an apostle does exactly that, and the answer begins a vision that has startled readers since the text came to light.

A Coptic text from a sealed jar

In 1945 local men digging near the cliffs of Jabal al-Tarif found a sealed jar. Inside were thirteen books made of papyrus sheets bound in leather, which scholars call codices. They hold more than fifty texts in Coptic, among them gospels, secret teachings, creation myths, and visions.

What is the Apocalypse of Peter from Nag Hammadi about?

It tells of a vision given to Peter. The Savior teaches him about blind leaders and false teachers, then shows him the cross with a living Jesus laughing apart from the figure being nailed.

Is the Nag Hammadi Apocalypse of Peter the same as the Greek Apocalypse of Peter?

No. The Greek Apocalypse of Peter is a different work that describes heaven and hell and was read in some early churches. This Coptic text shares only the name and the apostle.

When was the Apocalypse of Peter written and who wrote it?

The author is unknown. Scholars disagree about its date of composition and its relationship to other Gnostic documents. It survives in Coptic in a book found at Nag Hammadi in 1945.
