About this book
What if winning freedom means more than driving out those who rule you?
In Indian Home Rule, Mahatma Gandhi turns the struggle for India's freedom into a sharp conversation. The impatient Reader wants the British out and accepts violence if it brings independence. The Editor, speaking for Gandhi, challenges him at every turn: what changes if Indians take office but keep the same ideas of power?
The debate reaches beyond government into the habits of daily life. Gandhi questions railways, lawyers, doctors, machinery, and education in English. He argues that modern civilization is not the progress it claims to be. Against brute force, he sets soul force, asking how a nation can become free without making violence its foundation.

In short
Indian Home Rule is a short book that Mohandas Gandhi wrote in 1909, in Gujarati, during a sea voyage from London back to South Africa. He wrote fast, filling page after page in a few days, and later put it into English himself.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
Real freedom starts with ruling yourself
The book opens with an Reader who wants swaraj, or self-rule, and wants it soon. For him it means driving the British out and putting Indians in their offices. Gandhi, as the Editor, says this is not enough. If Indians take over the same machinery and the same habits, he argues, nothing has really changed. India would have English rule without the English.
So Gandhi gives swaraj a deeper meaning. It is first of all rule over the self. A person who cannot control greed, fear and anger is not free, even in a country with no foreign master. A nation of such people would simply swap one set of masters for another.

What is Indian Home Rule about?
It is a dialogue in which Gandhi argues for swaraj, meaning self-rule, through nonviolent resistance. He also criticizes modern Western civilization, railways, lawyers and doctors, and argues that India must free itself in a way that does not copy its rulers.
What does Hind Swaraj mean?
Hind Swaraj is the Gujarati title of the book. Hind means India, and swaraj means self-rule. Gandhi gives swaraj a double meaning, both political independence and personal self-control, and he stresses the second as the deeper one.
Who are the Reader and the Editor in Indian Home Rule?
The Reader and the Editor are the two speakers of the dialogue. The Reader is an impatient nationalist who is open to violence. The Editor is Gandhi himself, who answers each of the Reader's questions and tries to change his mind.
