What can a quiet nurse see that a brilliant surgeon and his admiring staff cannot?
In a London hospital, Hilda Wade earns trust through calm care and close attention. But her patience serves a private purpose. In Grant Allen's detective novel, young doctor Hubert Cumberledge watches her with growing admiration, then finds himself drawn into the cause she keeps partly hidden.
At the hospital's center stands Professor Sebastian, a brilliant, exacting surgeon whose authority shapes the lives around him. Hilda's mission ties her to this powerful man and to her father's disgrace. As separate cases feed a larger mystery, small observations raise a pressing question: what does justice require when official judgment fails?

Kurz gesagt
Picture a nurse who tells a near stranger, over the ices at a luncheon, that the charming hostess will be murdered by her husband within a year. Cumberledge is stunned into silence, because Hilda speaks with such calm confidence.
Aus der 15-Minuten-Zusammenfassung · Kerngedanke 1
A nurse's intuition outpaces the professor's science
Professor Sebastian is the star of St Nathaniel's Hospital, and the young doctors worship him. Hilda Wade joins the nursing staff for a reason she states openly, which is to be near him.
Sebastian is testing lethodyne, a new anaesthetic. Rabbits and sheep die from it, while hawks and weasels wake up lively. Hilda explains that the drug spares quick, nervous temperaments and kills sluggish ones. Later a young patient called Isabel Huntley slides toward death after taking it. Hilda brings her back with news that her sailor sweetheart has reached England.
