Your Five Senses Are Not the Whole Story
Lesson one opens by answering a familiar sneer. Some people say they believe only what their senses tell them. The author replies that the senses are poor instruments. Color blindness, optical illusions and the trick of crossing two fingers on a pea all show them failing. Even the sight of a motionless earth with the sun circling it is a false report, corrected only by reason.
He then asks what a sense really is. A sense is a channel by which a person learns about things outside himself. Behind the eye, the ear, the nose and the tongue stands the nervous system, and behind that stands the ego, the real knower. The eye is only a camera and the ear only a receiver of sound. Cut the nerve and the camera still works, but no message reaches the brain.

William Walker Atkinson (1862–1932) was an American author and lawyer. He was born in Baltimore, Maryland, and later lived in Chicago, Illinois. He wrote about New Thought, mental training, and occult subjects in the early twentieth century. He published under his own name and several pseudonyms, including Yogi Ramacharaka.
