About this book
A moonlit love song turns into a joke—and the joke opens a wound.
In The Poems of Heine, Heinrich Heine gives longing a tender voice and a sharp edge. Young Sufferings and Lyrical Intermezzo gather early poems of love that goes unanswered. Their short lyrics invite you into a Romantic world, where a dreamy mood can break suddenly into humour or pain.
The Homecoming looks back on love and youth with tired eyes, while the North Sea brings cold waters into view. Beyond these groups, the collection reaches into political satire and the bitter, witty poems of Heine’s illness in Paris. He laughs at Romanticism without quite letting go of its beauty.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A poet caught between two worlds
Heinrich Heine was born in 1797 into a Jewish family in Düsseldorf, a Rhineland town then under French influence. As a boy he saw the ideas of the French Revolution carried by Napoleon's armies. That memory never left him. It gave him a lifelong feeling that Germany lagged behind France in freedom.
He studied law at several universities, including Bonn, Göttingen and Berlin, though poetry mattered more to him than any court. He became a Lutheran Christian in 1825, partly because the law and the professions were hard for Jews to enter in the German states. He later regretted the step and felt it brought him little. This sense of standing outside every group runs through his writing.

What are Heinrich Heine's poems about?
They deal mainly with love, often unanswered, with nature and the sea, with German politics and satire, and in the late work with illness, death and faith. Irony and a sudden turn at the end mark many of them.
What is the Book of Songs by Heine?
It is Heine's first great collection of verse, published in 1827. It gathers early groups such as Young Sufferings, Lyrical Intermezzo, the Homecoming and the North Sea, and it made him known across the German states.
What is Heine irony?
It is his habit of building a tender or dreamy mood and then ending with a dry remark or joke. The sting shows the poet laughing at his own feeling while still meaning it.
