About this book

Moonlight, longing, old legends—and then a joke that breaks the spell.

In The Prose Writings of Heinrich Heine, a German poet turns travel, literature, religion and politics into lively prose. His Travel Pictures offers something other than a guidebook: romantic feeling meets sharp wit. Heine draws you into a lovely mood, then punctures it with a joke.

Paris gives Heine another field of observation. In French Affairs and Lutetia, he follows political quarrels alongside music, painting and theatre. His essays introduce French readers to German thought and German readers to French life. Throughout these pieces, feeling and political argument share the page with a mocking eye for censors.

A Poet Shaped by Two Worlds

The critic Havelock Ellis says Heine had one Greek half and one Hebrew half, and that the two never stopped arguing. Heine loved beauty, the senses and the sunlit gods of Greece. Yet he also carried the stern, freedom-loving spirit of the Bible.
