About this book

What if a house holds more than memories—and the dead refuse to stay quiet?

Great Ghost Stories, gathered by Joseph Lewis French, brings together supernatural tales of haunted houses, vampires, witches and restless presences. There is no single path through this collection. Each short story introduces its own setting, its own narrator and another reason to glance over your shoulder.

The haunted house brings memory and dread close to home. Vampires and witches draw on older fears from folklore. Across these tales, fear grows slowly, often through what remains unsaid. A glimpse, a sound or a rumour leaves room for your imagination to supply what you cannot quite see.

What you’ll discover

  • Houses heavy with memory Enter haunted spaces where the familiar idea of home becomes a source of dread.
  • Older fears take shape Meet vampires and witches whose roots reach into folklore beyond the ghost story.
  • The power of suggestion Discover how a glimpse or rumour can leave your imagination working in the dark.
  • A different dread each time Move between separate tales, each with its own narrator, setting and unsettling mood.
  • Room for fear to grow Take one story at a time and let its atmosphere linger before the next.

Is it for you?

This book suits readers who like short fiction, old-fashioned atmosphere and fear built slowly, and anyone who wants a sampler of the ghost story tradition. It may be less suited to readers who want fast action or modern horror.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1 of 4

The haunted house holds memory and dread

The haunted house is the best known setting in ghost fiction, and it is a natural opening for a collection like this. A house is where people live, quarrel, grieve and die. It is easy to believe that something of them stays behind in the walls and stairs.

What is Great Ghost Stories about?

It is an anthology of supernatural short stories chosen by Joseph Lewis French. The tales deal with haunted houses, vampires, witches and other presences, and each one offers its own setting and its own kind of fear.

Who is Joseph Lewis French?

He was an American editor who compiled many anthologies in the early twentieth century. His collections gathered short fiction by theme, such as sea stories, pirate tales and psychic or supernatural stories, for a wide readership.

Is Great Ghost Stories a novel or a collection?

It is a collection. Instead of one continuing plot, it brings together separate short tales by different writers. You can read them in any order and stop between stories without losing the thread.
