What if a drive through the English countryside leads straight into mistaken identity—and love?
In Set in Silver, C. N. Williamson and A. M. Williamson bring romance onto the open road. This witty novel unfolds through letters, with mistaken identity, motoring and sudden attachments sharing the journey. English scenery and country houses form the backdrop to a cheerful world where appearances matter.
The pleasures are gentle: lively talk, affairs of the heart and the freedom of travel in the early age of the motor car. The Williamsons keep the mood light and sociable. Read for the comedy of manners, the country house atmosphere and the promise of love along the way.

Kurz gesagt
What would you do if your closest friend begged you to lie to a stranger for six weeks, and her whole future hung on your answer? Audrie Brendon, a singing teacher at a French finishing school, faces that choice in the opening pages of Set in Silver.
Aus der 15-Minuten-Zusammenfassung · Kerngedanke 1
A debt of gratitude becomes a dangerous promise
Audrie Brendon teaches singing at a finishing school near Paris. She is nearly twenty-one, and money is short, so she and her mother live on her small salary. Her mother rests at a Swiss spa, and Audrie writes to her almost every day.
The job exists only because Ellaline Lethbridge, the school's richest pupil, insisted on it. Now Ellaline asks for payment. She has secretly promised herself to a French officer, and her guardian is about to arrive from India. She is sure he will forbid the match.

What is Set in Silver about?
It follows a singing teacher who poses as a pupil's identity to repay a debt. She tours England by motorcar with the girl's guardian, hiding her secret while their friendship grows. The story is told in letters.
Why is the book called Set in Silver?
The title comes from the Shakespeare speech printed at the front, which calls England a precious stone set in a silver sea. The story presents England as a jewel seen from a motorcar.
Who is Sir Lionel Pendragon?
He is a Cornish baronet, a Victoria Cross holder, and a former lieutenant-governor of East Bengal. He is forty, returns to England to claim a castle, and already serves as guardian to the girl Audrie impersonates.
