About this book

What happens when the people who dig the coal can no longer afford to feed their children?

On a black, windy March night, Étienne Lantier walks into the mining district of Montsou, looking for work. He finds a place at the Voreux pit and a room with the Maheus. In their crowded home, wages, debt and hunger shape each day. Beneath the ground, he learns what those wages demand of the miners.

When the company changes how it pays for timbering, the miners strike. Étienne becomes a voice for their anger and hope, while La Maheude struggles to keep her household fed. In Germinal, Émile Zola follows a community under growing strain, where standing together means risking what little remains—and patience and revolt pull people in different directions.
