About this book
What can woods, a lone bird, and a sea of grass teach us about facing death?
In Poems by William Cullen Bryant, the American landscape becomes a place to pause and think. Hills, woods, birds, and flowers bring questions of mortality, faith, and memory close to home. These poems gather a lifetime of reflection, from a teenage meditation on death to late verses on time.
Thanatopsis faces death with calm, while To a Waterfowl follows a single bird through carefully rhymed stanzas. A Forest Hymn finds worship among trees, and The Prairies opens onto a vast sea of grass. Alongside them, seasonal poems such as The Death of the Flowers turn toward loss and hope.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A New England poet finds his subject
Bryant was born in 1794 in Cummington, in the hill country of western Massachusetts. His father was a doctor who loved books, and he taught the boy to read poetry and to write it. The family library held English poets of the previous century, and young William learned their rhythms early. He also learned the woods and streams around the farm, and those places stay in his poems for the rest of his life.
He trained as a lawyer and practised for some years, but poetry kept pulling at him. In 1817 and the years after, his verses appeared in the North American Review, and readers saw that an American voice had arrived. Later he moved to New York and became a newspaper editor, running the Evening Post for decades. He wrote there on politics, public life, and the rights of ordinary people, while the poems stayed close to quiet places.
