About this book
What do you owe to home when another country also has a claim on your life?
In A Man of Two Countries, Alice Harriman places a life divided between nations against the open country of the American frontier. Each country has a claim on one man. The central question is simple to ask but hard to answer: where does he belong?
Loyalty and ambition pull through this adventure. Ties to a homeland can sit uneasily beside duties to a friend, a promise or a new community. Far from settled towns, the frontier becomes a test of character, where the wish to get ahead meets the weight of belonging.

In short
One insult on a steamboat deck can echo for years. In A Man of Two Countries by Alice Harriman, Philip Danvers, a reserved young Englishman, rides the Far West up the Missouri into 1870s Montana as a Mounted Police recruit.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A brawl and a rescue on the Far West
Philip Danvers boards the steamboat Far West at Bismarck with a party of recruits for the North West Mounted Police. A heavyset frontiersman named Robert Burroughs takes a dislike to the lean young Englishman before a word is spoken. He learns that Philip is only a plain trooper and starts to needle him in front of the crew.
Other passengers will matter for the rest of the story. Arthur Latimer is a cheerful young lawyer from the South. Scar Faced Charlie hauls freight and travels with his small sister Winifred, who has lost both parents. Philip is kind to her, and she takes to him in return.
