Für wen es gedacht ist

Readers who love frontier adventure, steamboats and Mounted Police, and stories where friendship and honor are tested by ambition and old grudges, will find plenty to enjoy here, along with a deepening love story that blooms late.

Worum es in diesem Buch geht

A Man of Two Countries is a novel of the American and Canadian frontier by Alice Harriman. It follows Philip Danvers, a reserved young Englishman who rides a Missouri River steamboat into Montana in the 1870s as a recruit for the North West Mounted Police. The book runs from muddy levees and whiskey traders to the marble halls of a young state capital, and it gives you a whole life played out in one changing landscape.

On that first boat Philip makes a friend, a rescue, and an enemy. The friend is a gentle Southern lawyer named Arthur Latimer. The rescue is a small girl in a red dress. The enemy is Robert Burroughs, a fur trader who hates him on sight and swears to ruin him. Years later, when Montana is a state, the same people meet again in a contest over a seat in the United States Senate, and old debts come due.

The story is about loyalty to friends, to a flag, and to a conscience. It is also about love that comes late and the price of ambition. Let us begin on the deck of the Far West, where the trouble starts with a single insult.

A brawl on the Far West

The novel opens at Bismarck, where Philip Danvers leads a party of horsemen onto the levee just as the steamboat Far West is about to leave. The recruits for the North West Mounted Police have booked passage months before, but the crowded passengers resent them. One passenger stands out at once, a heavyset frontiersman named Robert Burroughs, who seems to dominate even the captain.

Burroughs takes a dislike to the lean, dark-haired Englishman before a word is spoken. He learns that Philip is a plain trooper and not an officer, and he starts to needle him in front of the crew. Among the passengers are people who will matter for the rest of the book. There is Arthur Latimer, a cheerful young lawyer from the South who dreams of sitting on a state supreme court. There is a kindly doctor who believes that Fort Benton will grow into a second St. Louis. And there is Scar Faced Charlie, a freight hauler who travels with his small sister.

The sister is Winifred, a shy little girl who has lost both parents. Philip is kind to her, and she takes to him in return. She says she does not like Burroughs, and Charlie tells her gently to hush, though he admits that the river calls the man Sweet Oil Bob. Burroughs is on his way to open a trading post at Fort Macleod, and Charlie warns that the Canadian traders fear him.

The quarrel breaks into the open when Burroughs sneers at the Queen and at the young man's mother. Philip strikes him, and within moments recruits and civilians are fighting all over the deck. In the struggle a railing gives way, and Winifred is shoved into the swollen, yellow river.

Philip leaps in first, with Charlie close behind. He swims after her through whirlpools and past snags until he reaches a sapling that has carried her downstream. The rescue earns him Charlie's lasting gratitude, and it fixes in the child's mind a hero she will not forget.

That’s 1 of 10 key points.
