About this book

In crowded New York, precious emeralds draw relentless enemies—and a curse may be the least of the danger.

In Harold MacGrath’s The Drums of Jeopardy, a group of emeralds sits at the heart of a desperate chase. The jewels promise treasure, but they also bring danger that refuses to stay behind. Enemies tied to anarchist and revolutionary movements pursue their quarry into New York, where the struggle to escape turns the city into a place to hide and hunt.

MacGrath keeps the story moving through brisk chapters, sudden threats and narrow escapes. Crowded, loud and full of new arrivals, New York offers cover without any promise of safety. The emeralds are said to carry a curse, adding another shadow to a pursuit already driven by human enemies. This is adventure built around suspense, intrigue and the urgent need to survive.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1

A fugitive vanishes into the Albany fog

The story opens at half past three on a cold March morning, when a fast train from the West pulls into Albany. Fog lies so thick that the station lamps look like dim stars. A man in a long dark coat steps off with a scarred English kitbag and waits against a wall until the other passengers have gone. He has traveled sixteen thousand miles to get here, by horse, camel, ship and rail, always heading east toward New York.
