About this book
What happens when a priest’s longing for perfect purity meets a garden alive with forbidden love?
In Émile Zola’s Abbé Mouret’s Transgression, Serge Mouret serves Les Artaud, a poor village on the bare hills of Provence. His devotion to the Virgin Mary fills his life, but his parishioners care little for church. He seeks purity through prayer and self-denial, until fasting and strain bring him to a grave illness. His body can no longer bear what he asks of it.
Beyond the village lies the Paradou, a wild garden enclosed by walls. Here lives Albine, lively and barefoot, who wants to love and be loved. As Serge’s story enters her world, Zola brings sacred vows and human desire into conflict. The harsh church and the lush garden offer rival ways of living, and neither leaves the young priest’s deepest hopes untouched.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A priest who lives for the Virgin
The book opens in the small church of Les Artaud, where Abbé Serge Mouret is saying Mass. He is a slender, pale young man, and he is lost in prayer. His whole inner life is bound up with Mary. He does not think of her as a distant doctrine. He speaks to her as a mother and a beloved, and he feels her near him in the bare room where he sleeps.
Zola shows how this devotion grew from Serge's background. He belongs to the Mouret branch of the family, and his mother's nervous, religious nature has passed to him. He entered the seminary early and has been shaped by it ever since. He has been taught to fear the body, to fear women, and to fear the pull of the world. He takes these lessons gladly, because they match his gentle, shy temperament.

Where does Abbé Mouret's Transgression fit in the Rougon-Macquart series?
It is the fifth of Zola's twenty Rougon-Macquart novels, published in 1875. Serge is the son of Marthe Rougon and François Mouret, and his uncle Doctor Pascal Rougon appears here and returns as the hero of the last novel.
What is the Paradou in the novel?
The Paradou is a huge abandoned garden near Les Artaud, closed in by high walls and left to grow wild. Its name suggests paradise. Zola models it on Eden, and it stands as the opposite of the barren village.
